Increase student motivation by giving control

I have learned that great leaders understand that they can get more out of the people they serve by empowering them with control. This can be a difficult concept for some teachers. We are the ones who spend time writing out those lesson plans. We are the ones who have to answer for the test results produced by the students. We are the ones who have to pay close attention to the pacing guide.

You may find it crazy or overwhelming to think about giving control to the students, but it may be what is called for in order to encourage them to engage and make good decisions. As a leader, you are going to have to take calculated risks in order to accomplish the goal. The chart below illustrates the effects that student perception of control or lack of control has on student motivation. You can download it here. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
