Every teacher is a multiplier. Multipliers magnify and expand the unique gifts, talents and abilities of their students. This approach to teaching and leading is necessary to keep students engaged and focused on getting better. This is how to foster the Growth Mindset that students need to experience success and endure when things get difficult. Liz Wiseman’s book, “Multipliers: How the best leaders make everyone smarter” offers more details on this approach to leadership. She shares that without an intentional focus on helping people grow and multiply, the leader can have a diminishing effect on those around them. Obviously, as a teacher and a leader, you don’t want this. Great teachers train their thinking and focus their actions on becoming more effective multipliers. Embracing this idea of The Multiplier Effect allows you to push students to do their absolute best.
The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! is a great book for teachers to share with students just beginning school. Teachers must always be aware of the thinking that their students enter the classroom with. Poor thinking leads to poor decisions. Today, there are many opportunities that kids surrender when they attend school. Although these opportunities may consist of watching TV, eating candy and driving their parents crazy with their superhuman energy, they are important to children. While the direct approach is possible with the older students, it is necessary to take a more subtle approach with the younger children. Going to school full time is a pivotal moment in the life of a child. Helping them get comfortable with this transition requires tenderness.
The Pigeon series empowers teachers and parents with tools to help kids grow comfortable with the transitions and habits of life. The Pigeon HAS to Go to School! speaks to some of those notions that man kids (myself included) have about school and why it is necessary. As a Leader in the classroom, you can’t begin to forge that relationship with the students if they feel that their effort is meaningless. The author, Mo Williams has a special way of telling a story and using humor to get the point across. Adults love this series as well as the pre-order buzz has been noticeable. The Pigeon Has to Go to school! has just been released in time for the beginning of a new school year. For those of you looking for other tools to create/sustain a caring environment in the classroom, you will also like This pigeon has feelings, too!
