During the Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union, the two countries pushed each other to make advances in Science, Math, and Technology. When the Soviets gained the advantage in space exploration by launching sputnik in 1957, the U.S. government was concerned. The government looked at our public education and decided that changes must be made if the U.S. was going to beat the Soviet Union. Therefore, the college entrance exam was born. The first college entrance exam was called the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). The goal was to identify the brightest students and enroll them into major universities across the country. Currently, the more popular college entrance exam and widely accepted is the ACT test, pronounce A-C-T.
