Have you ever had to wait for something that you wanted so badly? When I was growing up I can remember around this time of year when I had turned in my wish list to Santa (my parents). I was so excited because I just knew that I was getting everything that I wanted because my “naughty” days were far behind me. The anticipation of that moment on Christmas Day was so overwhelming. I just couldn’t wait to see what I was going to get. I couldn’t wait to play with the toys and show them off to my friends. What a wonderful time of the year! I’m sure that for many young people around the world right now, the waiting game is especially hard to play.
Now, just because you are growing into a young adult and then eventually a full grown adult, there are still surprises, gifts, and special moments that you can look forward to. Just as a little kid should be nice in order to receive gifts on Christmas day, you have to do something in order to get something out of life. The things you must do include:
- Doing your best in school
- Do what your teachers ask of you
- Applying the feedback you receive from teachers, parents, and any other adult trying to help them
- Respect all authority figures in your life
- Set long and short-term goals
- Have a plan to pursue long and short-term goals
I speak from experience when I say that there is nothing sweeter than getting exactly what you want in life, especially if you have to wait. But don’t be confused, by ‘waiting’ you are actively pursuing everything that you want out of life. You pursue by doing the right things. Remember, in life, big things don’t just happen, you make them happen.
