Option 1: You can choose to work with a familiar friend that you have in the class. Maybe you will work part of the time and talk part of the time. It is possible you will complete the assignment, but your teacher will have to spend time getting you back on track. The time the teacher spends redirecting you could be better spent helping you accomplish your goal. Lastly, you and your friend are struggling in the class. One of the reasons is that you visit with each other too much during class. In terms of your grade in the class, you two are a bad influence on each other. Why did you choose to work together?
Option 2: You place the academic goal ahead of being with your friend and you seek out a student who is doing very well in the class. You ask to work with this student because you would like to do better in the class. While working with this student, you can actually learn because you two spend more time focused on learning instead of talking about things unrelated to the class. It is obvious that this option is so much better.
